When it comes to making lifestyle changes, information alone is not enough. Health Coaching uses a system designed to train individuals to be practical guides and partners for those learning to adopt new behaviors. The Loma Linda University School of Public Health Certificate Health and Wellness Coaching is an online three-course program designed to prepare individuals to guide and support others as they work towards their behavior change goals.

The 9 units earned in your certificate can be used toward an MPH degree in Health Education and Wellness Coaching. Integrating health education and wellness coaching courses provides you with a combination of cutting-edge skills in health and wellness, health education, health coaching, and whole-person care. Course Dates and Descriptions

HPRO 541: Wellness Coaching I, 3 Units

Thursdays from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. PDT

This synchronous course reviews the wellness coaching process. Introduces students to the practical methodology of motivational interviewing. Explores the techniques and theories associated with this coaching method. It details the skills needed to motivate patients toward healthier lifestyles successfully. Gives attention to practical information required to be a successful health professional. Includes an overview of positive psychology methods and theory.

HPRO 526: Lifestyle Diseases and Risk Reduction, 3 Units

Offered during the 10 weeks of summer

This asynchronous class discusses current lifestyle diseases, including cardiovascular, metabolic, communicable, and nutritional—concepts regarding risk factors, screening approaches, and risk reduction, impacting specific health parameters. 

HPRO 542: Wellness Coaching II, 3 Units

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. PDT

Covers the fundamentals of the coaching structure and process from coach preparation to program termination, including the legal and ethical implications. Explores specific components of the coaching process with special attention given to the coach/client relationship, empathetic communication skills, the importance of client reflections, and goal setting. Introduces the Wellness Mapping 360 tool to lay the foundation for the coaching plan.

Admissions Requirements/Prerequisites

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited university
  • Complete non-degree form
    • Interested parties, you will complete the non-degree form, sign, and then email it to ssledge@llu.edu. The form will then be taken to university records to register them for the course. Someone from student finance will contact you for payment, if applicable.

  • Authorization for Loma Linda University School of Public Health to submit non-degree form on your behalf
