An article titled “Experiences of a Rail Yard Community: Life is Hard” will be published in the September issue of the Journal of Environmental Health and is featured on the cover. The article, discussing the merits of Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR), comes out of the Center for Community Resilience, a part the Loma Linda University School of Public Health (LLUSPH). The papers lead author, Dr. Rhonda Spencer-Hwang, assistant professor at LLUSPH, drew from focus group data taken from the Environmental Railyard Research Impacting Community Health Project (ENRRICH) a two-year study, out of LLUSPH. The study gathered baseline information on community conditions and specific health outcomes in the populations residing near a goods-movement rail yard facility in the city of San Bernardino, California. “CBPR has emerged as an important tool in the fight against environmental injustice for severely disadvantaged communities,” said Dr. Spencer-Hwang. “Understanding community perceptions and engaging local institutions, businesses, medical centers, public health departments; and universities in a collaborative effort with a ‘health in all policies’ foundational approach is critically needed in promoting sustainable change.” The article can be viewed online at here and will be available when the print issue of the September Journal of Environmental Health is released.
