LLUHGIS Academic Offerings

The Health Geoinformatics Program certificate is designed primarily for health professionals and students who have completed a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university with a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 3.0. Qualified candidates must demonstrate computer proficiency, although no previous experience with geographic information systems (GIS) technology is required. Advanced placement can be considered for applicants with previous GIS experience/training. In addition, interested Loma Linda University students, staff, and faculty who would like to learn about GIS applications in health may also apply.

If you are interested in applying to the GIS program, contact Esther Guerpo, Director of Admissions at admissions.sph@llu.edu.

Story Maps

Using Esri Story Maps, our students combine authoritative maps with narrative text, images, and multimedia content. They use the power of maps, geography and data to tell a story. Check out some of the story maps created by our students.

Health Workforce Development

Given that every public health office in the country has access to ESRI’s GIS software, which is not being used maximally, LLUHGIS strives to promote scientifically sound public health practices, research, and dissemination of health-related data to provide working health professionals (locally and globally) with GIS and necessary spatial statistics tools to explore health, epidemic patterns of diseases, and to understand the impact of the environment on human health through training and education.

Every year, LLUGIS organize and execute a number of training and continuing professional education programs for health professionals locally and internationally. The number of attendees to some of these programs is increasing exponentially and in some cases a waiting list has been recorded.

The purpose of the health geoinformatics certificate is to prepare participants to apply geospatial information science and technologies to public health practice, research, and learning. These skills are highly desired today as an integral part of health informatics competencies that are needed by health professionals—according to the 2011 RAND Corporation report, "Mapping the Gaps."
